Concordia Studio's Danielle Juliao Brings Latin America to NADA Space

Danielle Juliao Lafaurie y Martin Isaza

Concordia Studio opened its newest group art exhibition, “05:59”, at the New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA) Exhibition Space in New York from October 7 to November 17, 2024.

Founded by Colombian-born curator and Parsons School of Design alumnus, Danielle Juliao, Concordia is a year-old nomadic gallery and curatorial studio, a result of Juliao’s desire to, “ to work on something that truly felt personal, and that could only be done through the arts,” (Latiness, 2023), after dedicating years of her career to the Leon Tovar Gallery and Art Dealers Association of America. Juliao and Isaza are long-time collaborators and colleagues, and “05:59” is Martin’s first curatorial collaboration with Concordia Studio.

The Colombia-oriented “05:59” art exhibition will amplify Latin American voices while redefining landscapes from an imaginative space. Featuring both 1980s abstract movement pioneers, Teresa Sanchez and Margarita Gutierrez, phenomenal young contemporary artists, Alejandro Sintura and Luisa Montoya and mid-career artists Juan Rodriguez Varon, and Ana Mosseri, each artist is set to depict their diversified experiences and challenges in the battle between modernity and tradition, reflecting broad trends in Latin American art.

Juliao tells artcurrently about New York’s impact on the artist selection process, she feels that “spotlighting artists who have been rarely seen here was important. Many of the artists shown in 05:59 either have interesting trajectories in Colombia or have immense potential and deserve some eyes in a city that offers a vibrant and thriving art scene… Their work perfectly sustains itself within a New York environment and that is very fulfilling for us as Colombians, too”.

As Concordia’s eighth exhibition approaches, Juliao believes that the NADA Exhibition Space is more than a venue, it is a merger of aligned perspectives. “The New Art Dealers Alliance always supports small gallerists by promoting the shows, artists, and programs, which is something we saw value in since the beginning and is a huge part of why we decided to collaborate with them. We have also been following their fairs in both New York and Miami for a while now, and feel that the kinds of artists and booths we’ve seen very much align with what we’re trying to do at Concordia - spotlight emerging and mid-career artists within the Latin American region”.

“05:59” will surely be a spectacle for exhibition visitors as each hand-picked artist reinvents nature into catalysts for broad artistic expression, a perception extending beyond the human eye. Set against a city with one of the largest art scenes at the NADA Exhibition Space, the six Colombian artists' works will speak in relatable concepts and open the opportunity for cross-cultural dialogue. A bridge between Latin America and New York.
