Ariana Papademetropoulos Channels Otherworldly Realms with LA Medium for New Exhibition in Milan

It’s rare to see an artist interpret a psychic’s vision or readings through art, but in the new exhibition, "Ringing Saturn," artist Ariana Papademetropoulos does just that. She collaborates with Wendy, a popular spiritual medium based in Los Angeles, to explore otherworldly dimensions— a metaphysical realm to Papademetropoulos—per se. Like the psychic, the artist plays on the connection between spiritual exploration and art, and the visible world.

“Ringing Saturn” at Milan’s MASSIMODECARLO promises new paintings of planets plunging into the abyss, giant soap bubbles floating lightly over sulfurous quarries, ghostly parlor animals, sensual female bodies bewitched by spells, poised between hyperrealism and the surreal. The exhibition’s title is a clever nod to Margot and Rudolf Wittkower’s 1963 work, “Born Under Saturn: The Character and Conduct of Artists”, and reflective of society's growing obsession with astrology. Curated by Arturo Galansino, Ringing Saturn marks Papademetropoulos's debut solo show and will be hosted at Casa Corbellini Wassermann in Milan beginning September 9, 2024.

California-based and best known for her evocative paintings, and best known for her evocative paintings, Papademetropoulos skillfully blends myths, symbols, eroticism, and Jungian archetypes to guide visitors through liminal spaces that challenge conventional perceptions of reality. Ringing Saturn encourages viewers to reconnect with our sense of wonder, showcasing the power of imagination as an enchanted lens through which to rediscover the magic woven into the fabric of existence.

As the curator describes, this approach could be considered "psychic-specific," where two worlds — reality and imagination — collide between reality and imagination. In an article for the Lampoon Magazine, Papademetropoulos explains, “While other kids had board games, I had an Ouija board and talked with spirits. I’ve always had a pull towards occult sciences. My belief in other realms has been ingrained in me since childhood, shaping part of my identity.”

In true fashion, this exhibition is set to be a voyage to those interested in taking a leap into the otherworldly realm.
